ABOUT TICKS
Ticks are one of the most dangerous pests in Lithuanian nature and living environment. These small arachnids not only cause discomfort but also spread dangerous diseases that can severely affect the health of humans and animals. The eradication of ticks becomes necessary when it comes to ensuring a safe environment in the backyard, on the farm or in public spaces. On this page, we will discuss why it is important to eradicate ticks, what the most effective measures are, how to properly prepare for the procedure and how to prevent a new infestation.
Why is tick control needed? Risks and consequences
Ticks are not only annoying parasites, but also a serious health threat. Their bites are often unnoticeable but can have serious consequences:
- Lyme disease: one of the most common tick-borne diseases in Lithuania. If left untreated, it can cause damage to joints, heart and nervous system.
- Tick-borne encephalitis: this viral infection can cause inflammation of the brain, long-term neurological disorders or even death.
- Allergic reactions: some people may experience severe itching, redness, swelling or even very dangerous allergic reactions such as sudden respiratory anaphylactic shock after a tick bite.
- Danger to animals: ticks are not only harmful to humans, but also to pets such as dogs, cats and horses. They carry a variety of animal diseases that can be difficult to treat.
How is tick control carried out? Effective methods and tools
Professional services - the fastest and safest solution
Choosing professional pest control service providers ensures optimum results and complete safety - they work to the highest standards, using only proven and environmentally friendly technologies, effectively reducing the population of both adult and larval insects. Specialists assess the size of the area, the type of vegetation, the distribution of ticks and select the most appropriate tick control measures. Only certified, environmentally friendly products are used, which kill both adult ticks and individuals in their developmental stage.
- Spraying: Special insecticidal solutions are commonly used and are sprayed on grass, shrubs, tree trunks and other surfaces where ticks tend to hide. Such measures are fast and effective, but all safety precautions must be taken.
- Spreadable granules: in some cases, special granules are used which gradually release the active substances and provide long-lasting protection.
- Natural remedies: natural solutions such as essential oils and plant extracts are becoming increasingly popular as they repel ticks, but their effectiveness is often short-lived.
Controlling ticks in the yard or on the plot is not only a one-off procedure, but also requires ongoing maintenance. Spraying is usually carried out in the spring when ticks become active and repeated several times during the season, especially if the area is close to woods, tall grass or wildlife migration routes.
- Before spraying, it is recommended to cut the grass to a height of 5-8 cm, collect leaves and branches and remove unnecessary objects from the lawn.
- Animals must be removed from the area during spraying, drinking water tanks must be covered and children's toys must be collected.
- After the treatment, it is recommended not to walk barefoot for a few hours or allow children to play on the freshly sprayed grass.
When choosing tick control measures, it is important to take into account the size of the area, the type of vegetation, and the presence of people and animals in the environment. The most popular measures:
- Certified insecticides: these are the most effective products that kill ticks quickly and remain effective for a long time. It is important to choose only those approved for use in the European Union and which are safe for the environment.
- Natural repellents: lavender, rosemary, mint, eucalyptus or lemongrass oils can be used as additional protection, but they are shorter-acting and usually only repel ticks, not kill them.
- Plants that repel ticks: lavender, chrysanthemum, sage can be planted in the plot or yard to naturally reduce the number of ticks in the environment.
- Physical measures: keeping lawns neatly trimmed, shrubs thinned, branches and leaves removed - simple but very effective prevention.
Prevention is the most effective way to reduce the number of ticks and reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases. Recommended:
- Mow grass regularly: Tall, dense grass is ideal for mites. Recommended grass height is up to 7 cm.
- Thin out shrubs and trees: Dense scrub and shady areas are a favourite habitat for ticks.
- Collect leaves, branches and grass residues: such areas attract moisture and provide excellent conditions for mite breeding.
- Avoid storing unnecessary items on the lawn: children's toys, outdoor furniture and swimming pools should be kept upright to prevent moisture from accumulating underneath them.
- Protecting your pets: use special collars or tick sprays, and regularly check your pet's coat after walks.
- Restrict wildlife access to the site: fencing or other measures will help reduce the risk of ticks being introduced.
- When is the best time to kill ticks?
The first time ticks should be removed is in spring, when the ground starts to warm up and ticks become active. If the area is close to a forest or a lot of wild vegetation, it is worth repeating the procedure every 1-2 months throughout the warm season. - Is tick control safe for children and animals?
Only certified products that are safe for humans and pets should be used, but it is recommended to stay away from the treated area for several hours after spraying, and to prevent children from playing on the grass or pets from running around the yard. - How to prepare the site before tick control?
Before the procedure, cut the grass, collect branches and leaves, remove toys, cover water tanks and remove animals from the area. If possible, make sure that neighbours are also aware of the planned spraying. - How long do tick control products last?
Most chemical treatments are effective for 1-3 weeks, depending on weather conditions, rain, sun and the intensity of use of the area. If the site is frequently visited, it is recommended to repeat the treatment more frequently. - Can ticks be eradicated permanently?
Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to eradicate ticks permanently, as they can be brought in by animals, birds or wind. However, regular extermination and prevention can significantly reduce their numbers and risks.
To ensure a safe and pleasant environment in your yard, plot or farmhouse, it's a good idea to choose professional help. Our team will assess the specifics of your site, select the most effective measures and ensure that tick control is carried out quickly, safely and reliably. We provide advice, answer all your questions and help you make sure your environment is protected from ticks all season long.
