MOTH
Moths are one of the most insidious pests in the home, and can cause damage to clothing, food, textiles and even carpets. Moth extermination becomes necessary when you notice these insects flying around your wardrobe, pantry or kitchen shelves. Although moths seem harmless at first glance, their larvae can destroy expensive fabrics, contaminate food stocks and cause unpleasant problems both at home and in business premises. On this page you will learn how to recognise the presence of moths, which methods are the most effective, how moths are eradicated at home and, most importantly, how to prevent a new infestation.
Why is moth eradication necessary? Risks and consequences
Moths are most commonly found in two main places - wardrobes and food pantries. Clothes moths prefer natural fabrics such as wool, cotton, silk and fur. Their larvae chew holes in sweaters, coats, carpets and even furniture. Food moths usually take up residence in flour, groats, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, tea, spices or even animal feed.
- Food contamination: food moths tend to take up residence in a wide range of foods, from flour, cereals, nuts and dried fruit to chocolate, teas, spices and even animal feed.
- Damage to clothing and textiles: in a short time, clothes moths can damage expensive clothes, bedspreads, carpets or even upholstered furniture. The larvae gnaw holes and leave silk cocoons, leaving fabrics irreparably damaged.
- Psychological discomfort: the presence of moths in the home causes unpleasant emotions and stress, especially if favourite items are damaged or food is contaminated.
- Business losses: in hotels, restaurant warehouses and food production companies, moths can cause serious losses, damage to products, deterioration of reputation and even legal problems due to hygiene violations.
How to recognise the presence of moths?
The most common signs of the presence of moths are:
- Small grey or yellowish moths fly in the evening, especially near light sources or cupboards.
- Small holes in clothing, bedspreads, carpets or furniture.
- Silk threads, cocoons, larval footprints in clothing or food.
- Stickiness of food, strange smells, small grains or clumps in packaging.
- Larvae or caterpillars found among clothes, on shelves or in food packaging.
Moth control methods and effective measures
Professional services - the fastest and safest solution
Specialists accurately identify the type of moth, the extent of the infestation and choose the most effective moth control measures. The most commonly used are certified chemical or biological agents that are safe for humans and pets and kill both adult moths, larvae and eggs.
- Sprays and dusts: special insecticidal sprays or dusts are used for wardrobes, pantries, shelves, where moths usually hide. They kill both adult insects and larvae.
- Pheromone traps: these traps attract adult moths and prevent them from reproducing. This is an excellent preventive measure, especially in food pantries.
- Natural repellents: lavender, cedarwood, peppermint, clove sachets or essential oils help repel moths, but usually only as a preventive measure.
- Thorough cleaning: vacuuming all infested areas, cupboards, shelves, drawers, cracks and corners with a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth with a mild detergent or vinegar solution helps remove eggs and larvae.
- Wash clothes at a high temperature (at least 50 °C) to kill eggs and larvae. If the fabrics are sensitive, use dry cleaning.
- Sort through your food and throw away any contaminated or suspicious packaging. Store loose products in sealed, airtight containers.
- Thoroughly clean furniture, cupboards, shelves and drawers without leaving hard-to-reach places and corners. Use natural repellents or pheromone traps after cleaning.
- Ventilate regularly - moths don't like cool, dry and well-lit places.
- In case of a large infestation, it is recommended to seek professional help, as only professional measures ensure a lasting result.
Prevention is the most effective way to protect yourself from moths and prevent new infections:
- Regularly clean cupboards, pantries, shelves and drawers - remove dust, crumbs and food residues.
- Store clothes, especially woollen or silk ones, in clean laundry in sealed bags or boxes.
- Only store food in airtight containers - this is especially important for flour, cereals, nuts and biscuits.
- Choose natural ways to repel moths: keep dried lavender, cedar wood pieces, bags of peppermint or cloves in wardrobes and pantries - these natural scents are effective at keeping moths out of textiles as well as food supplies.
- Avoid keeping food open for long periods of time - buy in smaller quantities to consume food more quickly.
- In summer, take your clothes out in the sun - ultraviolet rays kill moth larvae. In winter, clothes can be kept in the cold or even in the freezer.
- Check your pantry, cupboards and kitchen shelves regularly - the earlier you spot moth activity, the easier it will be to avoid serious damage.
- How do I know if there are moths in the house?
Moth invasions can often be recognised by small greyish or yellowish moths flying in the air, holes in clothing, silk threads between fabrics or larvae found in food. - What is the most effective remedy for moths?
The best results come from professional measures: insecticidal sprays, pheromone traps and thorough cleaning. Use natural repellents, sealed containers and regular ventilation for prevention. - Is it safe for children and animals to exterminate moths at home?
Yes, if certified products are used and instructions are followed. It is recommended to stay away from the treated areas for several hours after the treatment. - How long does the procedure take?
It usually takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the extent of the infestation and the size of the premises. - Can the moth be eradicated permanently?
With regular preventive measures and a timely response to the first signs, you can protect yourself from moths for a long time. However, if the environment becomes favourable again, moths may return.
To ensure a clean, safe and comfortable environment at home or in business, it's a good idea to trust the professionals. Our specialists will carefully assess your premises, apply the most effective solutions and make sure that moth control is carried out quickly, safely and confidently. We provide advice, answer all your questions and help you make sure your home or business is protected from moths all year round.
